The designer behind the Memphis based bow-tie sensation, Mo’s Bows, is 14 year-old Moziah ‘Mo’ Bridges.
Mo started his Mo’s Bows at age 9, with a love for bow ties, a strong sense of creativity and some help from his mother and retired-seamstress grandmother who taught him to sew and create his own bow ties. When he wasn’t tied up running his amazingly successful business, we pinned Mo down to ask him a few questions.
You started Mo’s Bows when you were just 9 years old. How did you decide to create a business out of bow ties?
I was always receiving compliments and positive attention for the bow ties I would wear to school or around town, and people would ask where the bow tie I was wearing came from. I realized that a line of colorful bow ties would be snapped up!
Where do you get inspiration for your bow ties?
I always want my ties to be original – it’s important that I have fresh designs for my customers. So I choose prints I have never seen before and I always go for unique color combinations and preppy fabrics because they really bring the bow tie to life.
What do you like best about being a business owner and entrepreneur?
The best part is choosing my own business hours. That’s important to me because I’m still a kid. Sometimes that means I have to do homework, and sometimes it means riding my bike or hanging with friends.
What do you like least about it?
Sometimes I have to choose between personal events and important business events. I want to keep growing Mo’s Bows, so most of the time I choose the business event.
What has been the most exciting thing that has happened with Mo’s Bows?
The most unbelievable thing that happened was when President Obama asked to meet me. It was a very cool moment that I still can’t believe happened last year. When I met him, he told me he was very proud of what I was doing and to keep up the great work.
You have a charity called Go Mo which helps less fortunate kids attend summer camp. Why did you decide to start Go Mo, and have you been able to meet any of the kids Go Mo was able to send to camp?
Meeting kids who have been given the opportunity to attend summer camp, just like I did years ago, is heartwarming. Childhood hunger is at its highest in the summer months in Memphis, so I picked a summer camp for Go Mo where kids are provided with food and they’re set for a fun summer.
What future plans do you have for Mo’s Bows?
I really want to expand, start designing clothes and really get my name out as a fashion influencer.
Do you have any advice for other tweens who are thinking of starting their own business?
Find your passion first and figure out how to make a business from that. It can be difficult sometimes, but always stay motivated!
Do you have a favorite bow tie?
My favorite at the moment is ‘Feeling Good’ because it has a cool crosshatch design, features lots of bright colors and it goes with my slogan: Look good. Feel good.
